Portrait of Jie-Hung Connie Shiau
Jie-Hung Shiau, also known as Connie, is an artist possessing exceptional power, purity of expression, and deep and delicate sensibility.
Raised in Taiwan from the age of 1 (but born in Florida), Connie was originally trained in the rigor of the ballet program of the Taipei National University of the Arts, before leaving Taiwan and transferring to the BFA program SUNY Purchase, and it was there that she fell in love with modern dance.
Connie arrived in the US speaking very little English, so dance became her primary vocabulary of communication and expression, and years later that still speaks powerfully in her movement and sensibility.

Connie’s personal artistic journey has taken her in a number of different and important directions. She worked as a young dancer with McArthur genius award winner Kyle Abraham, absorbing both the beauty and fluidity of his movement vocabulary, and the unvarnished strength of his story telling; she moved from there to work with Hubbard Street Dance in Chicago and the company’s extraordinary breadth of modern dance choreography.
She returned to New York in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic and is now making her own work and expressing herself artistically and physically with confidence as an Artistic Associate with Gibney Dance.
